Over the last few years, there has been growing awareness about the drug overdose epidemic in the United States. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported there were an estimated 72,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2017. From 2002 to 2017, there has been a 3-fold increase in the total number of deaths. The number of deaths involving opioids in particular has skyrocketed. These deaths take a tremendous toll on loved ones and the communities in which they live.

Today we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), an annual event held on August 31 that aims to bring attention to this issue and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death.

MHAMD is committed to this issue, including through its legislative efforts in Maryland to improve access to behavioral health services for all Marylanders and programs like Mental Health First Aid Maryland.

IOAD has a website that offers information, statistics and resources here.
